Hemp and how it may save America’s farmlands

This is an article in The Sanford Herald, NC, newspaper. It features an interview with Denny Lee and Lloyd Avery of Down South Hemp.

23 January 2019 The Sanford Herald, NC

I had submitted this article as: The Hemp Brief: Including Classification, The Endocannabinoid System, Pharmaceutical and Nutritional Research, The Economic Impact, How to Safely Shop for CBD Oil, and How Hemp May Save America’s Farmlands and the editor chose the final title.

President Trump recently legalized hemp by removing it from its classification of a Schedule 1Controlled Substance down to a 5, by signing the 2018 Farm Bill; a historical move that will mainstream this ancient herb. Hemp is completely different from marijuana in its function, cultivation and application. Cannabis sativa L. has a long history of utilization as a fiber and seed crop in China, and its seeds as well as other plant parts have been recorded in Chinese medical texts for nearly 2000 years. Hemp was cultivated by early Presidents and founders. There are 120 types of cannabis. CBD products are not psychotropic and contain miniscule amounts of THC, (less than 0.3 percent). Hemp is dusting off the stigma and dressing up the fields as stakeholders dance to the bank and researchers scrutinize breakthroughs leading to patents.

An important breakthrough was in 1990, when government-funded research led to the identification of the endocannabinoid system with two receptor systems referred to as CB1 and CB2 present in all mammals as a widespread response system to stimuli. Cannabis is a natural supplement for the endocannabinoid system. Biomed Research International published a hopeful report in December 2018, titled, “Cannabis Stavia L. and Nonpsychoactive Cannabinoids: Their Chemistry and Role Against Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Cancer,” in which the “data suggest a physiological role of the endocannabinoid system in the functions of immune cells with respect to inflammation.” Chronic inflammation causes DNA changes and increases the risk of cancer. CB1 is the most abundant neurotransmitter receptor of the brain. CB2 is throughout the immune system, organs, and nervous system. CBD doesn’t bind to these receptors, but instead interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system to maintain homeostasis – optimal performance balance and researchers continue to discover new benefits.

Medical News Today on Benefits of CBD relays benefit as pain relief, anti-seizure, anti-inflammatory, as an anti-psychotic for schizophrenia, to reduce Alzheimer’s effects and to treat anxiety. CBD Oil assists in withdrawal from tobacco, alcohol and opioids. There is much research on hemp’s effects on diabetes, acne, and cancer. The October 2018 research in “Nutraceutical Potential of Hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.) Seeds and Sprouts,” relays that hemps seed sprouts may prevent cell damage and slow cellular progression towards cancer. As a preventative nutritional supplement, research suggests that CBD Oil helps reduce the risk for memory loss and Type 2 diabetes, with its high rate of polyunsaturated fats. Full Spectrum CBD Oil is the most popular nutritional supplement due to its entourage effect.

There are no serious side effects of natural CBD Oil, but drug interactions can occur. (There is a free ‘drug interaction checker’ in the ‘no serious side effects’ link.) The Federal Department of Health and Human Services Department has a 2003 patent (still in effect), US6,630,507 – Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants, to use CBD as a treatment for various neurodegenerative and inflammatory disorders. Walmart Canada is considering selling CBD Oil, so it is a matter of time before it is in America’s Walmart. In 2017, CBD in Alcohol, US Patent 9,539,295 was granted, citing the scientific research in the aforementioned patent, US6,630,507 – Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants. Pharmaceutically, the newest related patent was awarded on December 4, 2018; US Patent 10,143,755 for hydrogels and dermal patches, some containing HEMP Oil (CBD).Medicinal uses of hemp are expected to exponentially skyrocket as tobacco stakeholders prepare for change. Tobacco giant, Altria, (Marlboro cigarettes) recently invested 1.8 billion in a Canadian-based hemp company, Cronos Group, and now everyone wants a piece of the hemp pie.

CBD retailers have been informed not to proclaim the medical or nutritional benefits of hemp products in their advertising by the FDA. At present, natural CBD Oil products are still available straight from the farm as well as online stores, and brick and mortar. The NCBOP cannot assist in making determinations if cannabis products have followed applicable laws. Currently, choosing a safe CBD product is primarily the responsibility of the consumer. Other than revealing CBD/THC levels, there is no standard, but there is a way to discern a safe, quality product, which is crucial because JAMA reports that a third of CBD products are mislabeled. During the extensive research, much was learned about how to read COA’s and how to determine high quality from low, and there is too much low quality on the market with unverifiable ingredients.

CBD Girl Next Door has been searching for a quality Full Spectrum CBD oil and conducted extended research including investigating COA’s from Colorado because they have had several years in the hemp industry to refine standards and establish protocol. Yet, while most of Colorado’s CBD websites with COA certificates pop up for disclosure, unless one knows how to interpret the analysis, one may be purchasing an inferior or dangerous product. Most Colorado websites with COA’s do carry ‘full profile’ which includes terpene levels and the potentially harmful substances levels, but not all carry mold and pathogen analysis. Remedy Review is a promotional magazine that offers a thorough guide on how to purchase the best CBD products as well as a global list of their favorites. CBD Girl Next Door investigated their first four favorites and found each to be lacking in at least one aspect of transparency on their websites or lacking in valuable cannabinoids, such as CBN, known to repress cancer cells, or CBG, the anti-inflammatory agent. Las Vegas area websites’ COA’s typically reveal only the standard CBD/THC ratios and some only the THC. Many Las Vegas labs had suspended licenses last year.  This research included in-person discussions, emails, phone calls, and online chats with laboratories, distributors, and farmers.

Out of seven NC industrial hemp farms, one in Erwin, NC, named Down South Hemp, owned by third-generation tobacco farmers, Denny Lee, Benny Lee, and Lloyd Avery, tops the list. Lloyd shared, “We have a hemp variety from the Middle East, Cherry Mom.” This is a medicinal variety and their COA had significant levels of both CBN and CBG, even though the crop was harvested two weeks early due to Hurricane Florence. In comparison, other local hemp crops harvested early had poor COA levels. They put 93 acres in hemp last year and plan to do it again this year. This says a lot about their strain, their knowledge base, and their commitment.

Their process system does not include decarboxylation, a heating method to alter the THCA, because they want to preserve the integrity of the beneficial terpenes and cannabinoids in their Full Spectrum CBD Oil. Hemp farming is a 24/7, 365-day job because the greenhouse plants are wintered until spring. But their investment to commitment is our gain. They use their CBD oil to help an 8-year-old handle ADHD and another youngster with eczema. “After eight hours,” Lloyd said, “the redness was nearly gone.” “We use it for arthritis,” Denny said as he worked his calloused hands, “and to keep calm and aches and pains. We have a doctor friend who comes, and he was here when a lady came about her 90-year-old husband who couldn’t sleep and had cancer. The doctor said to give him 50mg Full Spectrum CBD oil 5 times a day and it would help the cancer and the sleep. The lady came back and said, “That stuff works.” She was nearly in tears.” Concerning the US Patents proving the medicinal uses of CBD, Denny said, “Someone ought to sue the Federal Government with a class action lawsuit. They’ve known for years about what hemp can do.”

Down South is working on synchronizing its final products with lab batch COA’s on their website to provide full transparency. It takes time to educate oneself on the benefits of each cannabinoid and terpene and to understand ratios, so CBD Girl Next Door is working to provide easy translations of COA’s so consumers can save time and shop wisely. Down South’s hemp product is backed with a Full Profile COA and has outstanding levels of beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes and absolutely no harmful substances, including mold, mycotoxins, or pesticides. As industrial hemp farmers rise to meet safety and quality standards, more locals will be added to the ‘Welcome List.’

North Carolina Board of Pharmacy, 4.         So does this allow me to sell hemp seeds, hemp seed oils or other hemp products?
The laws do allow the sale of hemp products for consumption, such as hemp seeds and hemp seed oils, as well as other products containing hemp oils.  However, they permit only the sale of those hemp products that are specifically authorized by the applicable laws.  Therefore, these hemp products must be: (a) made of “industrial hemp” containing not more than .3% THC on a dry weight basis; and (b) produced pursuant to a state pilot program.  See 7 U.S.C. § 5940; N.C. Gen. Stat. §§ 90-87(16) and 106-568.51.

5.         How do I know if hemp products are made of “industrial hemp” with a THC concentration less than 0.3% and are produced pursuant to a state pilot program?
The Board can’t assist you in making those determinations.  Obviously, the Board is not in a position to test the THC concentration of the components in your products or to certify that they meet the standards.  Moreover, the North Carolina Industrial Hemp Commission is the entity with the authority for operating the pilot program, and you should contact the Commission with any questions about whether your product is lawful and was produced pursuant to an authorized state program .NCBOP  http://www.ncbop.org/faqs/Pharmacist/faq_HempDerivedProductsOct2017.htm

Ms. Sellers,

In regards to the number of acres planted in 2018 I could not say, the survey that would give us that information is still being filled out by growers. I can say however that there were 6,740 licensed acres in 2018 and 435 licensed growers.

Extraction methods

We use a combination of both Subcritical and Supercritical extractions. This allows us to perform a “fractional extraction” by first extracting at lower pressures to remove the lighter, temperature-sensitive volatile oils, and then subsequently extracting the same material at a higher pressure to remove the remaining oils. This approach is the best because it allows us to extract a complete range of cannabinoids, terpenes, essential oils, and other beneficial phytochemicals that yield a more potent blend.

CBG Cannabigerol or (CBG) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid.  It is commonly found in cannabis. CBG-acid is the precursor to both THC-acid and CBD-acid in the plant usually found at low levels (<1%) when present.

  • Researchers have demonstrated both pain relieving and inflammation reducing effects.
  • CBG reduces intraocular pressure, associated with glaucoma.
  • CBG has been shown to have antibiotic properties and to inhibit platelet aggregation, which slows the rate of blood clotting.
